Marti writes of her work, her life, and vision:

I have lived in the Mission Valley of western Montana for over twenty years -- long enough for for this landscape to inhabit me, as much as I inhabit it. I am very aware of the ways it continues to shape me. In every respect, this country reveals its history -- geological and human. It has been carved and hewn by great glaciers, then by the lakes and floods that were formed by their melting, and now by our continuous settling and development. I cannot look on this country without feeling the immensity of that history, and being awed by it.

Photography gives me a way of exploring what it is that attracts and moves me, as well as providing me with an outlet I seem to need for expressing my own response to it. Learning to stop and pay attention to the subtle interior movements generated by a particular scene is how the process begins. It isn't only the beauty that I am seeking to convey in my photographs, but something of what happens inside me. Perhaps the process is similar to writing haiku. One definition of haiku is "recording the essence of a keenly perceived moment linking nature and human nature". Simply slowing down and paying attention is immensely rewarding in and of itself.

There is a particular joy, a sense of mystery, and an awareness of connection to something deep and eternal when we stop and pay attention in this way. It is my hope that these photographs might inspire the viewer to slow down and pay attention to the extraordinary beauty in their own every day environments. All of these photographs were taken in Montana, most of them in the Mission Valley.
